I had a rare Friday evening free tonight, so Stacy and I went to see Shopgirl at the Byrd Theater. Despite living in Richmond for over two years, I'd never been to the Byrd before and was surprised that the tickets were only $2. It's not the nicest theater, but still you can't beat $2. I'd wanted to see Shopgirl before, but as far as I know, it didn't come to Richmond until now. That's one of the drawbacks of living in a small, relatively conservative city. Sometimes you have to wait for the DVD. Anyhow, I liked this movie a lot. I listened to the audio book with Steve Martin reading when it first came out about five years ago and I thought the film complemented the book nicely. I think the movie may have had a different ending though...I don't remember the book having a happy ending. I guess I thought the ending in the movie was happy and everyone may not agree. Five years ago, I myself may not have agreed that this ending was happy, but today I thought it was.
I finished the purple Kersti socks this afternoon. I was going to knit plain old socks like these for my sockpal, but I don't think I can do that again right now. I like the look of these a lot, but they were just so boring to knit. I'm glad I knit them though. They were the first socks I've knit without strictly adhering to a pattern. I went off on my own, and with some reference to Sensational Knitted Socks, managed a short row heel and a flat toe with plain knitting in between. Even though I very carefully counted the number of rows on the first sock several times, the second sock came out a little bit bigger. This seems to happen to me a lot and I don't know why. Maybe I'm more relaxed while knitting the second sock. This may be it because I also seem to make way more mistakes the second time around.
I decided on the blue and green Two Waters Fiberworks yarn for my sockpal socks, but I still need to decide on a pattern. At the moment, I'm leaning towards the Fancy Silk Sock from Knitting Vintage Socks. I would have cast on by now, but I don't have any US 1 DPNs that I like. With the super small needle sizes, I prefer plastic DPN's. I don't have any in size 1, but I ordered some and they have yet to arrive. In general, I prefer to knit socks on two circular needles, but I'm afraid to try to translate this particular pattern (it's written for DPNs) to circs. There is this slipped stitch involved at the end of every round and it freaks me out. It's hard to slip stitches when working with two circulars. Has anyone tried this pattern? Sage advice would be welcome.

Those are so pretty!

I want to run out and get some Kersti right now! Those socks are gorgeous. Wish I could help on the Fany Silk Socks question, but I am a DPN girl!

Nice job on the socks!
The Byrd isn't the nicest theater??? Awww, come on! It's got great interior architecture! And you haven't been there on a Saturday night when the organist rises up from the floor -- it's a treat!
As far as independent art movies coming to town -- they won't be in the area multiplex theaters, but we do have one arthouse -- the Westhampton, on Grove Ave, which gets some good indy films. I love that place.

Oh, and thanks for the review of the movie. I've read the book and thought it wasn't bad. I'll be renting the movie via Netflix....
